How Long Is an 8 Person Dining Table? 180cm vs 200cm vs 240cm

How Long Is an 8 Person Dining Table Size Guide
A customer recently asked us a simple question:

“How long does a dining table need to be to seat eight people?”

At first, it sounds like there should be a simple answer. In reality, there isn’t.

Some dining tables advertised as 8-seaters measure around 180cm long. Others are closer to 240cm. Both can seat eight people, but they won’t necessarily feel the same once everyone is sitting down.

If you’re looking for a quick answer, most 8 person dining tables fall somewhere between 180cm and 240cm long. A lot of them sit around the 200cm mark, which many people find works well in everyday family homes.

The reason there is such a big range comes down to how the table is actually being used.

Why Are Some 8 Seater Tables Much Bigger Than Others?

Think about Christmas dinner.

Most of us have squeezed an extra chair around the table at some point. Eight people can fit, but by the time the serving dishes arrive and somebody puts a bottle of wine in the middle, things start to feel a little crowded.

Now compare that with a table that’s used every day by a family of four or five.

Technically, both tables might be sold as 8-seaters. The difference is how much room each person has once the table is in use.

That is why you’ll see such a wide variety of sizes when shopping for dining tables.

Is 180cm Long Enough for 8 People?

In many cases, yes.

A rectangular dining table measuring around 180cm can usually accommodate eight people.

For a dinner party that lasts a few hours, most people probably wouldn’t think twice about it. For regular use, however, some homeowners prefer a little extra room between seats, especially if larger dining chairs are being used.

Chairs with arms can take up more space than people expect, and they can quickly reduce the amount of room available around the table.

Why Do So Many 8 Seater Tables Measure Around 200cm?

If you spend enough time looking at dining tables, you’ll notice that many 8-seater models are around 200cm long.

There is a good reason for that.

At this size, the table feels generous without becoming overwhelming. There is usually enough room for eight people, enough room for serving dishes, and enough room for the table to remain practical in an average dining room.

Here is an example of Cedar and Sage Boden 6-8 Seater Extendable Dining Table, which measures 200cm long x 100cm deep. It has a solid oak frame with lime washed finish.

The 200cm length makes it spacious enough for 6 or 8 people to sit there.

You might even consider getting a bench on one or both sides of the table, which can also save you space.
If you go smaller than 200cm, some people start wishing for more elbow room.

Or if you go larger, the table can become the dominant feature in the room.

For many homes, somewhere around 200cm tends to sit in the middle.

Extendable Dining Tables Tell a Different Story

Not every household needs eight seats every day.

That is one reason extendable dining tables have become so popular over the last few years.

A table might measure 160cm or 180cm for most of the year before extending to 240cm when guests come over.

In this example above, we have the Xavi 6-8 Seater Rectangular Extendable Dining Table. The top and legs are crafted from solid oak, which gives it a timeless and durable feel.

It measures 180cm, however it has a butterfly leaf extension, which you can extend and expand the width of the table to be 240cm when you have guests over and need to seat 8 people.

This hidden extension leaf is 60cm wide, which allows you to increase the width of the table from 180cm to 240cm.

One person who bought the table said ” I would say it is really an 8-10 seater unless you have extra large chairs”, while a second person said “because of the more central leg position, it’s much easier to get 8 people seated.”

It is easy to see why people like the idea.

The table stays compact when it needs to be. Then Christmas arrives, relatives visit, or friends drop by for dinner and the extra space is available.

Many of the extendable dining tables we see are designed around exactly this idea.

What About Round Dining Tables?

Some people wouldn’t consider anything other than a round dining table.

A round table changes the feel of a meal. Everyone can see each other, conversation tends to flow more naturally, and nobody ends up sitting at the far end of a long table.

To seat eight people comfortably, most round dining tables need a diameter somewhere between 150cm and 180cm.

The trade-off is space.

Round tables often need more room around them than people first imagine, particularly in smaller dining rooms.

That doesn’t make them a bad choice. It simply means the room layout becomes more important.

The Measurement People Forget

When people measure for a dining table, they usually measure the space where the table will sit.

What they don’t always measure is the space around it.

A dining table can fit perfectly against the dimensions of a room and still feel awkward once the chairs are in place.

  • People need room to sit down.
  • People need room to stand up.
  • People need room to walk behind chairs without turning sideways.

As a rule of thumb, leaving around 90cm between the table and nearby walls or furniture generally creates a more comfortable dining area.

It isn’t always possible, but it is something worth considering before ordering a larger table.

So, How Long Should an 8 Person Dining Table Be?

For most homes, somewhere between 180cm and 240cm is normal, with many 8-seater dining tables measuring around 200cm long.

The right choice depends less on the number of seats printed on the product description and more on how the table will actually be used.

A family that occasionally hosts guests may be perfectly happy with an extendable design.

Someone who entertains regularly may appreciate a larger fixed table.

That is why there is no single perfect answer.

The best 8 person dining table is usually the one that feels comfortable when everyone is sitting around it, not the one that simply claims to seat eight people.
